Walking Place

Travel on the 505 bus from Ambleside to alight at Hawkshead and walk the six miles back via Blelham Tarn, Wray Castle and Clappersgate. In the summer months a launch plies between Waterhead, Brockhole and Wray landing stages, giving an alternative means of completing the walk.

Ullswater

27th December – This coming February my Ullswater Walking Companion will be published by Countrystride. 20 fell and dale walks that reveal the scenic magic of the Ullswater valley Pooley Bridge to Brotherswater.

2022

27th December – So we stand at the threshold of an important year for Roman Wall enthusiasts. 2022 marks the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian’s only known visit to Britain in AD122 and, importantly for him, the opportunity to inspect the ongoing works to establish his remarkable frontier.

3rd December – Recorded the Countrystride Christmas episode from Grasmere, ascending Huntingstile Lonnin onto Dow Bank and over Silver How bound for Blind Tarn and Easedale. Our festive guest Alan Cleaver taking this photo of David Felton (producer) and myself in the cobbled lonning.

Looking west from Helvellyn

Birkhouse Moor

November 28th – Spotted last Monday a valuable off beat way to the summit of Birkhouse Moor branching from the regular Mires Beck path above the sheepfold. You can see two walkers descending from the eastern brink of the fell evading bracken and outcropping (see below).

Catstycam linescape

27th November – enjoyed creating this drawing today of Catstycam a startling component of the Helvellyn massif, I climbed this on Monday by the right-hand edge, the fell’s north-west ridge.
